Just walking around downtown San Marcos has a historical feel, the town center called “the square” has been preserved since 1851 and was named on the National Register of Historic Places.
San Marcos is a college town, home to Texas State University. It has an energetic vibe with excellent restaurants, shopping, coffee shops, bars, and live music. Be sure to go to a show at the Cheatham Street Warehouse, a venue with rich music history.
The Texas hill area is home to many caves, but none as interesting as San Marcos’s Wonder World Park. Explore the only accessible earthquake cave in the US! Wonder World also has an anti-gravity house, a trackless train to ride, and more.
San Marcos is also a fantastic place to get out on the water. The San Marcos River cuts right through town and residents and visitors love to swim, SUP, fly fish, and tub down this crystal clear river. There are also Glow Light Tours on the river which take participants out in the night to explore the river and its inhabitants via SUP with LED lights. This is an experience you won’t forget!
You can also get a great look at aquatic life while riding on a glass-bottom boat. Local’s favorite place to tube is at the Rio Vista Dam. This is a 13-acre natural water park with swimming holes and rapids. This is also a favorite snorkeling spot. Turtles, sunfish, and other aquatic life are in abundance.
Purgatory Creek Natural Area is another great recreation area with hiking, birdwatching, mountain biking, picnic areas, and more. Prospect park inside Purgatory Creek has walking paths and a learning center.
